The first consignment of goods which forms part of a large manufacturing plant landed at Durban’s Port recently and has been transported to the construction site in Mpumalanga

Chris Mulder, Project Freight Manager at Turners Shipping, says the entire plant is being imported in staged consignments over a six-month period. “We had to get authority from SARS to facilitate this.”

“There is quite a bit of break bulk in this project which means part chartering vessels to carry the fabricated steel sections from various ports in China to Durban”, explains Chris.

“In addition, there are a number of over-sized units included in the project so we will be conducting a Route Survey to ensure clear and safe routing to site.”

By the end of the project, Chris expects to have managed the transport of around 300 TEU’s and 1500 tonnes of breakbulk and abnormal loads.
